1.Laser cutting Week

Laser-cutting! I enjoyed this weeks assignment. Getting more comfortable using the laser cutting equipment made me excited to think what future projects I want to start working on.

Getting Started With illustrator

First I started by refreshing my memory on illustrator by watching the videos linked in our class website.

Another illustrator tutorial.

Next I reviewed the laser cutting safe materials list to figure out what materials I would used for my test raster and vector swatches.

Then I went on illustrator to create my swatch squares. I adjusted the raster and vector power, speed and frequency based on estamate ranges unitl I adjusted them to cut correctly.

I chose this blue acrylic, cardboard, a 1/8inch peice of wood, a 1/16 inch peice of wood and a thicker black peice of acrylic for my materials.

After succesfully printing out my tiles, I started on the final project.

Final Project...

First I uploaded the box design I wanted to use off of Boxes.py

I chose UBox.

Next I ajusted the box a bit to make it a little taller than the original.

Heres what its supposed to look like put together

After I had established my template, I uploaded it into illustrator.

I then adjusted the raster and vector settings to work with the 1/16th inch wood I was using.

I also made sure that the laser was set up correctly .

Then I pressed print!

But..... The laser did not cut all the way, even though it had worked on my swatch

Restarting

Finally we realised that the speed of the vector needed to be decreased in order for the laser to cut all the way for the more complex box design.

Yay test cut worked!

This time the box cut perfectly.

Putting it together!

box fit together so well, here is me holding her for the first time. proud maker

I decided to really make this box shine by adding a fresh coat of paint.

I also added a few extra designs on the side.

Overall this week went a LOT easier than coding week. I am pumped to create some new projects. Here is the link to my Ubox design file link here!
